ii: generation alpha


i: an intro

Hi there. Before I start, let me introduce myself first. My name is Fatimah Mardhiah binti Omar and I am a TESL Part 8 student. I am from Terengganu and I still can't believe that I am in my final semester of my degree already! Let's not waste our time anymore so that we can move on to the series of questions.

1. How would you rate yourself in terms  of your computer skills?
To say that I'm a total clueless would be a lie, but to say that I got everything in my hand sounds so wrong too. I would honestly say that I'm that average user; I could handle simple program such as Microsoft Office Words, PowerPoint and Excel but I couldn't exactly manage to deal with a more complicated software :P

2. What computer software and hardware knowledge do you have?
Like I mentioned above, I could fairly use a few like Microsoft Office Words, PowerPoint and Excel and those are all basic ones (and I'm still proud of it)

3. How do you think technology can assist learners learn a 2nd or a foreign language?
As technology plays a vital part in our life, there are so many ways a learner can benefit from technology when it comes to learning second or foreign language. First of all, is through the never-ending resource from the internet. Everything is merely at the tips of our finger and all that's left to do is to find the right platform. Students can enhance on their learning skill by watching the videos without subtitle on Youtube, for example as well as visit Wordpress or other sites that provide materials for informational as well as leisure reading. On top of that, with the advancement of technology, learners nowadays do not have to carry around the thick dictionary as there are a lot of application or online dictionary available such as Merriam Webster. In relation to our education system, technology can assist the students in terms of language learning as in teacher can use audio and projector as part of their teaching approach to make the lesson interesting.

4. Have you experienced learning via the computer?
Yes, I do. In previous semesters, we integrated online learning in a few of our courses, so I had experienced using Padlet, Powtoon and a few other.

5. Did you try to incorporate technology in some of your lessons during your practicum? Was it a success or a failure? If you did not, what was/were the reason(s)?
I tried to incorporate technology in my class once during my practicum but it was a failure. The school compound that is small making it harder for the students to pay attention to listen to the audio as noises were echoing from every side. The students in my class are easily distracted, hence whenever other classes are having their Pendidikan Jasmani at the field and making loud noise cheering and shouting, the students in my class become restless. Plus, if I tried to put the speaker to maximum volume, I will disrupt the classes next door. 

6. What is your opinion/ prediction/ perception on the use of technology in language teaching and learning?
If the teacher is creative, innovative and competent in the use of technology in his/her classroom, I believe that the lesson can be as interesting as possible hence will help with the teaching and learning process. Making the lesson more student-centered and incorporating technology would be good as the lesson would be more interactive as well as it will give the students the quality of autonomous learning.

7. What do you hope to learn/ gain from this course?
I hope I can learn much more about software and program that can help to become a better teacher in the future so that my students are interested in my lessons. Younger generation nowadays are different from my generation when I was in school. It is only logical that I cater to their interest by having knowledge about technology available in today's world.

8. What is the topic chosen for your Academic Exercise? Why have you chosen the topic? Who is your supervisor? How do you plan to complete your AE so that it follows the designated processes (chapter by chapter) and can be submitted in time?
My topic is related to motivation and learning styles. But I am planning to change the topic as this topic is much more general. I have yet discussed this with my supervisor, hence I don't exactly know what my actual topic will be. My supervisor is Encik Fazyudi and I am planning to complete my AE by adhering to my supervisor's advice and also to consult him every time I have difficulty to sort my  AE.
